Perry Barr BMX Track back in the 1980's
Information kindly supplied by Andy Restall, club Chairman – one of the original track riders, pictured below!
The track at Perry Barr was completed in the early spring of 1984. It hosted it’s first race meeting, The Coca Cola Classic, in the summer of 1984, hosting 600 entrants from world wide.
The following year the track hosted the UK British Champion of Champions, with over 1200 rider entries, held over two days of riding.
The track was nick-named ‘The Motorway’ because it was long, flat and a bit of a lung-buster at around 340 meters long!
The Council hired the track out to a host of Midland clubs and associations to run regional and national events between the 80′s and 90′s, as well as Bells Farm adopting the track for a few seasons in the early 90′s.
The track hosted Nationals in 1987, 1988, 1989, 1991 and 1993 from Time UK BMX and BBMXA and also hosted BB British Championships up until the early 90′s.
The track fell into disrepair from the mid to late 90′s due to the fall in numbers within the sport.
